Numerous studies show that the popular statin drugs for coronary heart disease are problematic. In previous posts I’ve commented on the reduction of CoQ-10 and the muscle pain and weakness accompanying two thirds or more of those on cholesterol lowering statin drugs. Twice the heart failure is recorded in more than one study because of weak heart muscle.  New information published by Health Sciences Institute, March, 2009 cites a study done in Denmark on yet another negative finding for statin drugs.

This is a major side effect of polyneuropathy, which causes weakness and pain in the hands and feet. This can affect normal walking ability.  The Denmark study found that after one year on a statin drug, 15% of those patients had polyneuropathy.  With two or more years on a statin, the risk of polyneuropathy goes up to 26% for the drug takers.  The Health Sciences Institute recommended a supplement with plant sterol esters (that compete with cholesterol & reduce it) instead of statin drugs.

A number of studies demonstrate that the heart failure rate is twice as high with those on a cholesterol drug because the statin drug also takes out CoQ-10.  CoQ-10 is needed in every cell of the body for energy production and cell wall integrity.

As we age, the body naturally produces less CoQ-10, because age takes it toll on efficient body functions.  If a statin drug is taken it can even be life threatening without CoQ-10 supplementation.
