It is well established that blood pressure is improved and degenerative diseases are reduced by eliminating harmful oxidized cholesterol, metals and toxins. Age accumulates and stores these detrimental substances but they can be removed by chelation.

How does chelation work for coronary atherosclerosis? The typical chelation therapy uses EDTA (ethylene diamine tetra-acetic acid); it is a mild organic acid, which binds metals and bring them into solution. They are released into the blood and then filtered out by the liver and kidneys. Much of the plaque of atherosclerosis (and amyloid in the brain) is accumulated by inflammation from the metals calcium, lead, iron and mercury as well as oxidized cholesterol.

EDTA binds heavy metals, cholesterol and calcium, and sends them into solution (blood to urine), and they are removed from the body.

The good minerals in your body can be depleted, if not already bound. Fortunately, the calcium in bones and teeth is bound and not removed with chelation. It is the unbound calcium in the vascular system that requires removal.

If not removed from the vascular system, it can result in calcification of the heart, kidneys and soft tissue.

With EDTA chelation, vitamin C and E supplementation is recommended along with the good minerals of magnesium, potassium and zinc. Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that acts as a key immune system nutrient and a potent free radical fighter. Many toxins and inflammatory free radicals are released with chelation. Vitamin C, as an antioxidant, neutralizes free radicals by donating one of its own electrons, ending a damaging free-radical, chain reaction.

The end result of chelation is: improved circulation, better oxygenation and less degenerative diseases of the brain and cardiovascular system. Hypertension is lowered; heart attack and stroke risk are reduced. You should be monitored by a knowledgeable health practitioner who understands chelation and cardiovascular disease.

Vitamin E is an antioxidant that sacrifices itself for your cells. Vitamin E works much like Vitamin C, to sacrificially give electrons to the needy enemy free radicals which otherwise steal them.  Vitamin E helps prevent oxidation of lipoprotein (cholesterol) which increases cardiovascular disease and stickiness of blood platelets. Vitamin E helps keep arteries flexible and elastic, so blood flows more freely.

Vitamin E does more. Once vitamin E has provided electrons to free- radicals, E is regenerated by other substances.  These include vitamin C and glutathione; E goes on to defend and protect other cells. This makes vitamin C and vitamin E important in the chelation process.

What does the process of chelation therapy involve? EDTA or a chelating agent is introduced into the blood where it can contact the metals and toxins. This is best achieved by intravenous injections of EDTA. This may take 3 or more hours and as many as 30 sessions. (This is expensive and time consuming).

There are alternatives that can be taken orally. EDTA oral formulations are less effective, and also require a longer period of treatment; but they do overcome some of the disadvantages of IV therapy. In more recent times, a new form of chelation has developed. It does not have the drawbacks that EDTA seems to have.  It is safe, low in cost and convenient.

Perhaps the most promising solution for chelation is now the protocol developed and introduced by Isaac Eliaz, MD. He is a respected researcher, author and integrative physician. He sought information about pectin and alginates effectively used in the Chernobyl radiation victims of Russia.  He found the toxic substances can be separated without removal of the good and necessary unbound, minerals such as magnesium, zinc and potassium. It is safe and without side effects.

This new chelation agent (PectaSol) is a combination of modified citrus pectins and alginates.  It captures the metals and toxins when you merely swallow 2 capsules, and then repeat this for a number of days.
