H1N1 Flu Prevention with Vitamin D
By admin | November 21, 2009
H1N1 flu is a buzzword that strikes fear in much of the population. Insufficient vaccines, problems raised about the hazards of the vaccine and the effectiveness of it are real. Little is addressed in the media about another solution…prevention. You may ask how can this be effective?
There are many diseases and disease processes that are stopped or prevented by adequate amounts of vitamin D in the human body. Research in the past 10 years has uncovered an enormous amount of data. Dozens of creditable studies, double blind, placebo controlled studies, on large population bases clearly show this. The dramatic reduction of 17 types of cancer, cardiovascular diseases, (heart attack, stroke, PAD, high blood pressure), neurological diseases, diabetes, auto immune diseases such as arthritis and fibromyalgia are major ones on the list.
It is a tremendous immune builder and inhibitor of many, many diseases. For example, a study done in a prison validated the huge protective power of vitamin D against the flu. Dr. Cannell cites a 2005 study on his ward of prisoners. They were all taking a vitamin D supplement when a flu epidemic broke out in the prison. Nearly all other prisoners contacted the flu, none of his ward did.
Vitamin D deficiency is widespread and believed to be deficient by over 83% in many populations. The ability of the body to convert sunshine and the cholesterol molecule into vitamin D decreases by 400% from the age of 20 to age 70.
Twenty-five different studies in diverse, worldwide populations find a deficiency in most from 40% to 100% of the population. Revelations from recent studies on vitamin D are, like the proverbial iceberg, only a fraction of what is there.
Vitamin D-3 (that found in humans) comes from sunshine on the skin and cholesterol underneath it. The UVB rays from the sun turn the cholesterol molecule into vitamin D-3. If you cannot get enough sun exposure (winter or long distance from the equator) then supplements are the answer. They are highly recommended by alternative medical doctors for almost everyone…Denis Van Loan D.D.S.
