Metabolic X…Diabetes II…Cardiovascular Disease Connection
By admin | October 24, 2009
Metabolic X, the precursor of diabetes II, can ultimately spell coronary heart disease. Diabetes II is the chief type of diabetes, involving statistically 90% to 95% of those with diabetes…according to Wikipedia. Also according to Wikipedia, over 44% of U.S. residents over age 50 already have metabolic X syndrome. Many do not realize they have the condition.
The difference of diabetes II as compared to diabetes I is a matter of available insulin. Genetically diabetes I is caused by a lack of insulin. Diabetes II is caused by overabundance of insulin in the blood. The insulin does not easily get into the cells to help the metabolism of glucose into energy. The net effect is an overabundance of glucose circulating and resulting in inflammation of the vascular system.
What are the signs and symptoms of metabolic X?
- Obesity…especially in the abdomen
- Excess blood glucose…even with fasting
- Elevated triglycerides
- Reduction of the good HDL cholesterol (core molecule for testosterone, estrogens, vitamin D & cell walls)
The typical progression of unchecked metabolic X is diabetes II. The diabetes II patient is then vulnerable to several diseases of various organs. Coronary heart disease (#1 killer in the USA), kidney disease, retinopathy (resulting in blindness) and non-alcohol caused fatty liver disease. The American Diabetes Association says 65% of all diabetics will die of cardiovascular disease.
What are the dynamics and sequel with diabetes II? Obesity occurs because the body fails to burn fats when glucose is so abundant. Normally 60% to 70% of your energy should come from the burning of fats. Typically triglycerides (fats) are metabolized and turned into energy. This is a much more complex process than the simple conversion of glucose into the ATP (cellular) fuel.
Fat burning requires bile to break the long chain fatty acids, along with oxygen and fat enzymes to convert the fatty acids into ATP energy. Since glucose is so abundant, the body takes the easy source of energy and stores the fat into fat beds.
Inflammation due to irritating cytokines from the fat beds, triglycerides and excess glucose becomes a problem. They wreak havoc with your cardiovascular system. Inflammation increases blood pressure, causes LDL cholesterol plaque to be attached to the inflamed arteries. This arteriosclerotic plaque, along with higher blood pressure, increases heart attack and stroke.
The good news is diet and lifestyle can usually keep in check or reverse metabolic X and control diabetes II. Here are some recommendations by the American Diabetes Association:
- Eliminate sugar and quick converting starches, replacing them with complex carbohydrates that metabolize slower.
- Get regular exercise. Typically victims of metabolic X are sedentary. Thirty minutes of exercise is recommended daily. Brisk walking qualifies.
- Lose weight and reduce the body fat
While treatment and supervision by your physician is recommended, there is some argument among medical doctors as to the best treatment. Alternative doctors like Julian Whitaker, M.D. have a good track record without drugs. Other medical doctors recommend drugs, even though they can increase inflammation and cause excretion of essential minerals…another issue to deal with.
I am not recommending any treatment or cure, I am just reporting what I find in the medical literature. I want you to be aware of how frequent metabolic X is and how common diabetes II is in the population. If you want to reduce the incidence of future heart, eye, kidney and liver degenerative disease, pay attention to the metabolic X and diabetes II problem...Denis Van Loan D.D.S.
