“Diabetes III” and Alzheimer’s
By admin | October 17, 2009
Breakthrough research and anecdotal reports are uncovering an amazing finding about Alzheimer’s. For some time it was known that Alzheimer’s victims had difficulty utilizing glucose in brain cells. Why is this significant? Because second only to the heart, the brain is an enormous energy user.
Alzheimer victims, like type II diabetes can have plenty of glucose available, but it does not easily get into the brain cells. Furthermore there is a tendency to build up amyloid plaque, the hallmark of Alzheimer’s. Of course this leads to cognitive decline and malfunction. The memory loss and brain malfunction can also cause huge emotional and relationship problems.
Here is the good news. Dr. Julian Whitaker (M.D.), respected by alternative doctors and hated by mainstream medicine for his contrary positions, reports on an interesting case. It lends credibility to the new label of Alzheimer’s as “diabetes III”.
Another doctor, Mary Newport, M.D., has a husband only 59 years old with Alzheimer’s. She learned of a new drug trial that demonstrated remarkable treatment for many Alzheimer victims. Upon further investigation Dr. Newport found the active ingredient in the drug was medium chain triglycerides. (MCT’s)
The MCT’s are fatty acids, less stable organic compounds, that metabolize more easily into energy than regular fats. They are more easily used for energy rather than stored in fat beds like long chain fatty acids. The process involves release of keytones. As such they are deficient in hydrogen atoms and more easily converted into energy. It appears they are able to furnish energy to brain cells; whereas regular glucose has difficulty. This can have remarkable improvement in Alzheimer’s as it did for Steve Newport.
Steve’s wife, Dr. Newport, found coconut oil was very high in MCT’s. She began a regimen of providing 16 grams of refined MCT oil mixed with 12 ounces of coconut oil. Steve received 7 teaspoons of the oil mixture at each meal. Significant improvement was found in only 2 months. After one and half years there was amazing improvement in a disease that has historically defied successful treatment.
Steve now has his normal gait back and can even run. (This ability was previously lost.) He is more alert and talkative. His memory has improved. He feels as if he “got his life back”.
One case does not prove a universal cure for Alzheimer’s. However, Dr. Julian Whitaker now recommends ketone therapy for all his patients with brain diseases. This includes Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, dementia, multiple sclerosis and Lou Gehrig’s disease.
It is noteworthy that Julian Whitaker, M.D. is one of the most successful doctors in the treatment of diabetes II. He thoroughly understands the dynamics of cellular resistance to glucose. Just as it was long known in diabetes II… cellular resistance to insulin inhibits the utilization of glucose… it is now also emerging in Alzheimer’s as a primary factor. Hence with Alzheimer’s the moniker of “diabetes III” is now emerging…Denis Van Loan D.D.S.
