Coronary heart disease supplements are one of the pillars of heart health. Cardiologist Dr. Stephen Sinatra, as are cutting edge heart doctors, big fans of supplements. Dr. Sinatra in his writings, research and patient treatment has some favorite supplements. I’ll touch on a few of the major ones he most often uses.
CoQ-10, in the oil soluble, ubiquinol form is best. The crystalline form is poorly absorbed as is the ubiquinone form. CoQ-10 is necessary in every cell wall in the body and essential for utilization of energy by every cell. It is depleted with age and many drugs, especially the cholesterol lowering drugs. Heart doctors often recommend 100 mg or more daily because of the huge energy needs of the heart.
D-Ribose is an essential part of the energy molecule of ATP. It gives quick energy and greatly strengthens a weakened heart. Medical doctors often recommend 10 to 15 grams daily.
L-Carnitine is likewise important in energy production, especially for long term delivery of energy because it is needed in the burning of fats for energy. All body cells need it for sustainable energy. It is often prescribed in amounts of 1 to 3 grams.
A good multiple vitamin supplement with minerals in balanced form is needed. Especially the B vitamins, trace minerals and particularly the mineral magnesium are all important to optimal heart health. The supplement should come in the form of several capsules because some vitamins are water soluable, some are only oil soluable and the minerals must be in compatible, well assimilated organic forms…Denis Van Loan D.D.S.
